Initiatives for the Next-Generation Development Projects
New Initiatives of the Aisin Group to Enhance Competitiveness
The automobile industry is changing at an extremely rapid pace. This includes advances in zero emissions technologies and automated driving, a dramatic evolution in information technology (IT), and even changes in people’s lifestyles, to the point where a car is becoming something people use rather than own. In response to these sudden structural changes, we are making efforts to enhance the sense of unity and the competitiveness of the Aisin Group*. Consequently, we have designated the areas of “zero emissions”, “automated driving”, and “connected cars” as development areas of focus. We launched the virtual company (VC) system as a new group collaboration system capable of demonstrating comprehensive strength through cross-company business units that go beyond the conventional framework to reliably and powerfully promote these development areas of focus.
*Aisin Group: A corporate group of approximately 200 companies around the world with Aisin Seiki Co., Ltd. at its center. Aisin AW is a vital core of this group.
The Aisin Group has identified and is conducting development work in three development areas of focus: “zero emissions”, “automated driving”, and “connected cars”, in an effort to strengthen our competitiveness with respect to next-generation technologies. In addition, we have established six development working groups (WG) for these areas to promote various development activities.
Initiatives for Zero Emissions
As a specialized drivetrain manufacturer, the Aisin Group has made its wide variety of products, such as manual, automatic, and hybrid transmissions, a pillar of its business. And now, the group focus to help realize zero emissions by utilizing the various technologies that the group has acquired and honed over the years to promote electrification and technologies for EVs and FCVs.
Initiatives for Automated Driving
The Aisin Group has been promoting the development of various products in the field of chassis and vehicle safety system, such as the parking assistance system, which was first introduced to the market back in 2003 before any similar product. In the field of automated driving, we will utilize the knowledge that the group has acquired during the development of these technologies to develop new control technologies and automated driving services such as vehicle dynamics control and automated valet parking.
Initiatives for Connected Car Services
The Aisin Group has developed various technologies in the areas of information services and automobile bodies. These include products that are able to perceive vehicle passenger information and vehicle location information, such as car navigation systems and driver monitors, as well as power sliding doors and power seats using actuators. We will combine these technologies to promote the further development of hospitality services and location-based information services that will contribute to the development of connected cars.
The virtual company (VC) system is composed of four business VCs: Powertrain, Chassis & Vehicle Safety System, Body, and ICT & Electronics. The activities of these business VCs will promote swift business operations on a group basis while respecting the accumulated skills, strengths, and expertise possessed by each Aisin Group company.
